When summer arrives, who can resist the call of the Mediterranean! Few things are more enticing than a relaxing swim at Playa de Muro beach when temperatures rise and the days grow longer. Even so, this lovely area of Mallorca has much more to offer.
At Las Gaviotas Hotel, we know how fortunate we are to live in such magical surroundings in the Bay of Alcudia, a place closely familiar to us since the hotel has been operating since 1968. As a result, we would like to suggest a few different ways of enjoying a summer’s day at Playa de Muro, activities that we ourselves continue to do even today. Good things are for sharing.
Start the day with bit of exercise
If sporting activities get you going for the rest of the day, we suggest you set off early, when the temperature is still pleasant, and go for a run, swim in the pool or at Playa de Muro beach, or go cycling (hiring a bike at the hotel, if you want). At Las Gaviotas, a scrumptious breakfast will await you on your return to help you recharge your batteries.
Strolling round the markets
Local markets and fairs are a superb opportunity to rub shoulders with the local population. The closest are at Playa de Muro and Muro, although you can also visit those of Alcudia and Sa Pobla and discover the individual charms of each one.
Playa de Muro weekly market. Every Monday from June to October from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Playa de Muro evening craft market. Evenings from June to October from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Muro weekly market. Sunday mornings.
Alcudia weekly market. Tuesday and Sunday mornings.
Sa Pobla weekly market. Sunday mornings.
Savour Mallorca’s local dishes
It is a sin to leave Mallorca without having tried traditional specialities like tumbet (a typical summer dish made of vegetables), arròs brut (broth made with meat, vegetables and rice) or frito mallorquín (a popular dish made of vegetables and either fried meat or fish).
Although they are more typical at Easter, in summer you can also find empanadas de carne y guisantes (meat and pea pasties) or robiols (sweet crescent-shaped pastries) in many parts of the island.
Visit an ecological treasure
S’Albufera Nature Reserve, between sa Pobla and Muro, is an authentic paradise when it comes to biodiversity. It can be visited free of charge on foot or by bike along well signed tracks. A good pair of binoculars are a good idea for observing the over 200 species of birds that have been catalogued there. For further information, see the website for the nature reserve.
Read a good book in the shade
When temperatures rise, there is nothing better than to sit on a terrace with a cool drink and a good book. One of the quietest is the Pool Bar at Las Gaviotas, where you can have a drink in your swimsuit and take a dip in the pool whenever you want.
A nice cool bottle of real ale
With the booming popularity of real ale, new top-quality brands have started to appear, like those of Beer Lovers, a small brewery in Alcudia. Its name says it all: if you like genuinely good beer, these are the ones for you. The brewery is very close to us and we share a liking for local produce and local customs. It is hard to choose between the brewery’s different beers: Blat Witbier, Broll Pale Ale, Bram Amber Ale and Llop India Pale Ale... Maybe you’d better decide!
A twilight stroll along Playa de Muro beach
This is the most relaxing time of day, when there are few people on Playa de Muro beach. You have over 5 km of fine sand to stroll across as you watch the sun set over the nature reserve on the eastern peninsula. It is an image you will never forget when your holiday comes to an end.
